Fira Barcelona

Situated in the vibrant and bike-friendly city of Barcelona, the venue, Fira Barcelona, is easily accessible via public transportation, offering visitors a convenient way to attend events with a minimum carbon footprint.

Fira Barcelona adheres to sustainability guidelines that are in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the venue is dedicated to environmental protection, promoting the circular economy, tackling climate change, and addressing social exclusion.

Some initiatives supporting these efforts include the reuse of materials used at conventions and congresses. For instance, by using recyclable carpet across 550,000 square metres of the venue space. In 2023, 60% of organisers at Fira Barcelona demonstrated a proactive commitment to sustainability by choosing carpets made from 75% recycled materials and so did the ESCRS Congress for their 2024 event.

The venue also implements effective measures to reduce its ecological footprint, such as employing advanced technology for leak detection, installing water-saving fixtures, and partnering with local authorities to responsibly repurpose water resources. These initiatives have led to a significant 25% reduction in water consumption.

Fira Barcelona’s commitment to sustainability is underscored by its internationally recognised ISO 14001 Certification and adherence to the Barcelona Biosphere Tourism Sustainability Commitment.

Gastrofira

Gastrofira is committed to promoting sustainable practices and implementing the goals set within the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to strengthen the links between food, people, and the planet. The catering company focuses on contributing to these SDGs by incorporating them into its strategy and extending this commitment to exhibitors and visitors.

To achieve this, Gastrofira explores the complex relationships between climate change and food systems. Recognising the critical role food production plays in environmental sustainability, the company seeks to mitigate climate change by prioritising local suppliers for 60% of items purchased for food production.

The company uses bulk supplies whenever feasible and actively recycles paper, cardboard, plastic, glass, and metal at the city’s recycling plants. Gastrofira also utilises compostable or disposable biological materials (BioWare) to minimise waste and requests that all partners and suppliers follow sustainable policies, ensuring the entire supply chain aligns with its commitment to environmental and social responsibility.

In line with its dedication to social responsibility, Gastrofira collaborates with companies that provide employment opportunities to individuals from marginalised groups, contributing to a more inclusive society.

Gastrofira also partners with Barcelona-based Nutrition without Borders, an organisation formed by health professionals aiming to reduce global malnutrition. Supported by the Spanish Society of Community Nutrition and the UNESCO Chair at ULPGC, it focuses on addressing nutritional needs through public health initiatives, cooperation, education, and the promotion of food resource equity.
